Reinforcements

Hooray! My GW Washes set came in, along with a few other bits and pieces:

I immediately set to work experimenting with the washes, and think I've settled on a color scheme. Basecoat of Mechrite Red, followed by a wash of Devlan Mud. Then a highlight of Blood Red to make it pop. Below is my test model after experimenting (with the uniform scheme, that is):

I also got a few more masks done - this leaves only three more to do in order for the first squad to be complete:

I'm still waiting on the WWII helmet heads, which I hope will arrive this week. However, I've got plenty more to keep me busy - both another Leman Russ and a Chimera to build, for one.

This army is going to be Mechanised, and so that means there will be six (yes, six) Chimeras. As a result, I don't want to just make them standard... I was thinking of making them STeG4s, but with a transport capacity. Since the STeG4 is wheeled, I looked for inspiration. I found it in this - Owen Rees' 374th Tahnelian Airborne.

Assuming I can figure out what the heck to make the wheels out of, I'll be doing something similar. If anyone has any ideas on where to get some affordable, appropriately-sized wheels, please let me know!

I've recently read the Gaunts Ghosts novels so I can appreciate what you are doing here. The conversions so far look GREAT! I think I may have to add you to my blogroll so I can follow your progress...

I just found your site by way of the Adeptus Arizona board (I just joined).

Really nice blog here, I'm glad I stumbled across it. Keep up the good work, I'll be checking back to see how those Chimeras go.

Very, very nice. I hadn't seen Owen's wheeled transports. I've been dreaming of mechanized traitors too.

Thanks for more inspiration.

Hi Techpriest,

Those masks look great, what sorrt of appearance were you going for? I sense a sort of 'death-jester-esque' feel to them, but they look excellent on the models.

@73rd - that's exactly the sort of look I was going for. A lot of the fluff describes the grotesks as having hooked noses and exaggerated chins, a sort of carnival feel.

Thanks for the comments!

I would use Ork truck wheels

I'm in the same boat myself. I might use a 1/48 scale Stryker kit if I can find one. (8 wheels for cheap, along with some other bits for the box!) There's a ton of 1/35 but I'm afraid the wheels would be too big.

I'm also thinking about just using a chinese WZ551 APC, since it fits Abnett's description of the vehicle, including the "broom handle turret". (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WZ551)
